Welcome to the web site of the Synod of Living Waters, a mission arm and governing body of the Presbyterian Church (USA). We serve 12 presbyteries in the states of Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee.

Our mission is to witness to Jesus Christ in partnership with our presbyteries, their 753 congregations and the General Assembly of the PC(USA).

The Peace of Christ be with you.

We pray for Haiti

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
As the eyes of the world turn to Haiti, let us join our hearts in prayer:
God of compassion
Please watch over the people of Haiti,
And weave out of these terrible  happenings
wonders of goodness and grace.
Surround those who have been affected by tragedy
With a sense of your present love,
And hold them in faith.
Though they are lost in grief,
May they find you and be comforted;
Guide us as a church
To find ways of providing assistance
that heals wounds and provides hope
Help us to remember that when one of your children suffer
We all suffer
Through Jesus Christ who was dead, but lives
and rules this world with you.  Amen.

“Keeping the Faith" - Frances Presbyterian Celebrates 100 Years

Just outside of Mexico, Kentucky is the crossroads known as Frances.  The predominant landmark in Frances is the Frances Presbyterian Church.  It has been there for over 100 years!  In June of this year the Frances Church and nearly 100 friends, former members, and faithful Frances folks gathered for their Centennial Celebration.  As part of the celebration, the session and congregation buried a time capsule.  Sometime in the future, “probably in another hundred years someone will open it up and see what we were doing and what it was like in 2009,” said Butch Gray, pulpit supply for the church.  Gray turned the spade that buried the time capsule after the worship on 7 June, 2009.

The Frances Presbyterian Church traces its roots back to the early 1800s and includes a time when they worshipped with the Crayne Presbyterian Church nearby.  Crayne helped the church establish a new congregation in Frances in 1909 and the rest is the current history of the church.  The Frances Presbyterian Church is a small but mighty witness in the rural area of Crittendon County!

Smith's Grove Presbyterian Church - 175 Years Strong

On the 27th of September 2009 over 100 people gathered for worship and celebration as the Smith’s Grove Presbyterian Church completed their 175th year of worship!  Their long time pastor, the Reverend Dr. Ken Dick, led the inspiring worship service and the most recent “son-of-the-church”, the Rev. Dr. Evan “Charlie” Evans, preached the sermon.  The Rev. Evans reminded Smith’s Grove that they have had “sufferings” which produced “perseverance” and “character” and they can look forward “with hope” to their continued witness for Jesus Christ. (Romans 5: 1 – 5)

The church was founded in 1834 and they moved into their present worship space in 1889 where they faithfully witness to Christ’s presence in Smith’s Grove.  The church is on the National Register of Historic Places.  In 2004 they constructed a large Family Life Center adjacent to the building housing the sanctuary.  They, 175 years later, still live their Mission Statement, “Christ centered worship and service in a family of faith open to all.”

A number of friends of the church were present at the celebration and following the worship service there was a feast made possible by the members of the church.  The Family Life Center was packed with great food, fine fellowship and a warm atmosphere.

Smith’s Grove Presbyterian Church is the eastern most church in the Presbytery of Western Kentucky.  Also of note that both the Rev. Dick and the Rev. Evans have served as the Stated Clerk of the Presbytery of Western Kentucky!  Together they have served the Presbytery for over 20 years.

Cecelia Memorial Presbyterian Church - 162 Years and Counting

As the only predominantly African – American Church in the bounds of Western Kentucky, the Cecelia Memorial Church continues to witness to the mighty power of God among the faithful in downtown Bowling Green.  The church stands prominently among the new building projects in downtown.  Next door is the new Chamber of Commerce building; across the street is the new stadium for the Bowling Green Hot Rods, a Class A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays.  Proudly standing tall in the middle of the redevelopment is the church that Cecelia Little worked hard to construct not long after she became a “free” woman in the mid 1800s.

Cecelia Memorial began as a Christian Church (Disciples) and then became affiliated with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.  In the 1920s Cecelia permanently affiliated with the antecedents of the PC(USA).  Her long, rich history includes an amazing number of pastors who had a number of degrees and were affiliated with Western Kentucky University located nearby.

PowerHouse Ministries formerly occupied the building next to Cecelia and was “displaced” when the new construction began.  The pastor, the Rev. Ford Huxley, provided the message for the Anniversary service.  The Rev. Huxley reminded everyone to never “listen to the bearers of an ‘evil’ message” using the Numbers 13 / 14 description of the Israelites preparing to enter the Promised Land.  All were encouraged, especially the small but dynamic Cecelia congregation.
